The Assyrians, the traditional owners, indigenous and ancient people of Iraq, have helped shape Iraq long before the modern state existed. Throughout history, we have been the foundation and have been embedded into the framework of Iraq itself by translating Greek and Latin knowledge into Syriac and then Arabic - subsequently allowing the Arab world to advance philosophy, poetry, and medicine. This preserving the intellectual foundations of the Islamic Golden Age - particularly the famed House of Wisdom in Baghdad, and helping secure the northern Mesopotamia border through frontier conflict with the Ottoman Turks after World War I, besides all the obvious and great contributions during the golden-age of the Assyrian Empire.

Yet despite their contributions, the Assyrians place in Iraq’s story is too often overlooked and has been attempted to be erased.

This remains true for the 2026 World Cup, once again; Five Assyrian players - Aimar Sher, Kevin Yakob, Rebin Sulaka, Frans Putros, and Peter Gwargis - helped Iraq reach its first World Cup in 40 years (of which that historic campaign leading to the 1986 World Cup was partly guided by the legendary Assyrian coach Ammo Baba, while Assyrian football icon Basil Gorgis represented the nation on the world stage), largely excluded.

Just the latest chapter in a history of Assyrian contributions to Iraq, of which we will always intrinsically be a part of in the hope that we will be recognised and rewarded for who we are.

This capsule collection celebrates Iraq’s revisit to the World Cup after 40 long years, with the graphic taking reference from the iconic Adidas 1986 Home Jersey and the Iraqi Coat of Arms - with the 2 stars representing Iraq’s World Cup appearances.
