Assyrian New Year or “𝘒𝘩𝘢’𝘣 𝘥’𝘕𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘯” (ܚܕ ܒܢܝܣܢ , “First of April”), also known as “𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘩𝘢 𝘥’𝘚𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘢" (ܪܫܐ ܕܫܢܬܐ , “Head of the Year"), and as “𝘈𝘬𝘪𝘵𝘶” (ܐܟܝܬܘ), is the spring festival among the indigenous Assyrians of northern Iraq, north-eastern Syria, south-eastern Turkey and north-western Iran, celebrated on the first day of April.
The festival has its roots in the ancient Mesopotamian religion practised by Ancient Assyrians, ushering in the beginning of spring on the 21st of March, the Akitu celebration lasts for 12 days until the 1st of April, ushering in the New Year with hopes of prosperity and blessings.
This year is the year 6772 (2022 AD), which is recognised to be the continuation from the year 4550 BC (the year of the first Assyrian temple being built), though the Assyrian people and identity can be traced back further.
Assyrians typically spend the New Year celebrating together in social gatherings filled with much eating and dancing, typically dancing the Traditional Assyrian Folklore dance of ‘𝘒𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘢’.
